After osteoclasts remove old bone, osteoblasts deposit bone in this circular arrangement beginning with the outer ring and working inward. As the osteoblasts become trapped in their own calcified deposits, they turn into osteocytes

The osteocytes are in the lacunae, which are seen in in the top micrograph as well as in the Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) below as small ovoid dark spaces between the matrical lamellae
